It is never too late, (or too early), to have your kids help in the kitchen. Although it will likely require more time, patience, and clean-up, the benefits of hands-on cooking experiences with kids is totally worth it. Not only will it be fun for everyone, kids will also:
- Learn valuable cooking skills to help throughout their lives
- Develop more self-confidence and independence
- Demonstrate better problem-solving skills
- Be more willing to try new foods
- Learn different family traditions and cultures
- Expand math skills
- Build relationships and create memories
If you’ve tried cooking with your kids, you know it doesn’t always go smoothly. There can be tears, messes, mistakes, and accidents. To make sure you create lasting POSITIVE memories, keep these things in mind:
- Keep dangerous tools, equipment, and ingredients out of reach of curious hands.
- Make sure hands are washed and food is handled properly.
- Engage conversation by describing what you are doing, asking questions about where food comes from, prompting them to count ingredients, etc.
- Leave yourself plenty of time. Making cookies with your toddler will take more time than making them on your own. Plan ahead and don’t be in a time crunch.
- Choose developmentally appropriate recipes that aren’t too difficult or time intensive.
- Include the children in the decision making and ingredient selection. This makes them feel empowered and involved.
- Consider choosing a seasonal recipe that encourages creativity and fun!
